From PCT to Preceptor: A career built on purpose

What does career growth really look like as a Patient Care Technician (PCT) at Fresenius Medical Care? In this interview, Cynthia C., who started her career here in 2008, shares her journey from a new PCT to a preceptor supporting multiple dialysis centers.

Tell us about your career journey.

I started my journey in healthcare because I wanted to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Over time, that purpose has only grown stronger. Early in my career as a PCT, I found so much fulfillment in connecting with my patients — whether it was making them smile, laugh, or simply helping them feel more comfortable during treatment.

That experience really grounded me in the why behind the work. Like many people, I didn’t have a perfectly mapped out career path. I grew by stepping into opportunities, even when I wasn’t sure I was ready. Today, as a Preceptor III, I support multiple dialysis centers across western Arizona. Working closely with my Director of Operations and area teams, we are improving processes, strengthening performance, and enhancing patient care together. Each step of my journey has shaped me into someone who is resilient, driven, and committed to making an impact.

How has the company supported your career growth?

Fresenius Medical Care has given me opportunities to grow in ways that I did not think were possible. There were times I stepped into responsibilities beyond my role that felt uncomfortable at first, but I was supported and encouraged to keep going.

Through leadership guidance, mentorship, and hands-on experience, I’ve built confidence in my skills and expanded my impact. I’ve also had the opportunity to be involved in projects where we focused on improving organization, standardization, and efficiency within our centers.

Being trusted to support multiple clinics and take on new challenges has been a big part of that growth. I’ve also seen so much growth across the company, and that has inspired me to keep pushing myself forward — especially in continuing my business studies. This environment has helped me grow professionally and believe more in what I’m capable of.

How does your work impact our patients?

Even though I may not always be chairside, my work directly supports the experience that patients receive every day. I’ve seen firsthand how overwhelming treatment can feel, and that perspective continues to guide the way I approach my work.

By helping centers improve scheduling, reduce long turnovers, stay aligned with best practices, we create a smoother and more supportive environment for our patients and staff. I’ve also worked on initiatives like developing a tracking process to identify and redistribute equipment, helping to ensure home therapy teams have what they need for training.

When operations run well, patients feel it — they feel respected, cared for, and valued. Knowing that the work I do behind the scenes contributes to that experience is what makes it so meaningful to me.

What do you enjoy most about working at Fresenius Medical Care?

What I enjoy most is the people and the shared sense of purpose behind everything we do. I’ve had the opportunity to work with teams that genuinely care — not just about their patients, but about each other.

There’s something really rewarding about supporting clinics through both challenges and successes. Whether it’s helping a team improve performance or celebrating when they reach their goals, those moments matter. It reminds me that we’re not just focused on metrics — we’re building stronger teams and better experiences for our patients.

What excites you most about your future with the company?

What excites me most is the opportunity to continue growing and making a greater impact. I’m passionate about developing as a leader, and continuing to support teams in a way that drives both strong results and positive patient experiences.

I’ve come a long way in my journey, and I know there’s still more ahead. Being part of a company that continues to evolve gives me the opportunity to keep learning, improving, and contributing in meaningful ways. I’m excited for what’s next, not just for myself, but for the teams and patients I get to support along the way.
